Description: 

Lovely thatched cottage scene well cut by Alden Fretts, Pittsfield and West Springfield, MA in 1930's from plywood, interlocking with at least 24 figure pieces. His "signature piece" is the figure of a running dog in the lower right corner.  Artist has been identified as W.M. Thompson by web browser Vance (Jeff) Cook who has kindly identified several other artists for me.  William Thompson Russell Smith (1812-1896) was a Scottish-American painter who produced iconic images of Pennsylvania's landscape inspired by the aesthetic of the Hudson River School. Wikipedia  Letter to Anne Williams re life of puzzle maker included in box.  Very large puzzles with 676 pieces.
