Raphael Tuck & Sons, London, England didn’t start to make hand-cut puzzles for adults until the first puzzle craze hit in 1908. They started the Zag-Zaw line in 1909 which became the staple of the Tuck product line until the start of WW II when their plant was destroyed in the German blitz of London. All Zag-Zaw puzzles incorporated figure pieces and were sold in plain boxes, usually orange or red, without any guide pictures. In the early years, the cutting was a fairly simple non-interlocking style but by the 1930s it had become interlocking with “y” shaped or earlet knobs.
