U-Nit puzzle cut by James Browning, W. Calwell, NJ 1950/60's. Interlocking with 63 figure pieces. My notes identify artist as Charles Relyea, but I am unable to corroborate this. Unusual pose for Washington as he wouldn't shake anyone's hand because he thought it was beneath the president to do so, and bowed instead (Thomas Jefferson reversed this tradition a decade later). However, Valley Forge preceded Washingon's terms as President (1789-1798). Charles Mark Relyea (1863 – 1932) was an American illustrator whose work appeared in magazines and popular novels in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Valley Forge functioned as the third of eight winter encampments for the Continental Army's main body, commanded by General George Washington, during the American Revolutionary War. In September 1777, Congress fled Philadelphia to escape the British capture of the city. Wikipedia
