Provenance (Armstrong family), scroll cutting style and wooden tray for assembled puzzle mark this beauty as an Arteno. Unfortunately, the puzzle had 15 pieces missing. In the 1970's, long before I became interested in restoration, Charles Russell, Auburn, MA made the replacements for us. His wife leafed through countless magazines looking for areas in colored pictures matching the color areas needed in the puzzle picture. Russell did not trace the empty hole but rather double cut outside the hole into the existing puzzle to make the new piece or section. If the original pieces were ever found, they would not fit now. And his cutting style within a section being replaced does not match the scroll style of the puzzle. Still, he did a very good job and the replacements will remain part of the puzzle’s provenance.
