Probably the best English maker of hand cut puzzles (and certainly one of the best anywhere) was Holtzapffel & Co. in London, England. Cut interlocking out of solid wood c.1909, the puzzle shown is from their "Figure-it-out" series and is a dramatic example of highly irregular border cutting, in this case cut exactly around the central figure. To display the puzzle, I traced the puzzle outline onto foam board and used a spiral blade (which cuts in any direction) to cut out the outline before gluing it onto another piece of foam board and finally inserting the puzzle. Believe me, even with a superior saw, magnifying glass and blades, I had trouble duplicating the Holtzapffel cutting, especially in the fringes of the scarf. Besides the obvious color line cutting around the central figure, Holtzapffel also employed color line cutting within the puzzle, creating a superb puzzle. Artist: unknown.
