Reverie

Catalog Code:
1- 1183
Description:

Sometimes, a puzzle grows on you, as this one did on me. Cut by Emily Batterson, leading cutter in Hartford, CT 1910s. Solid wood, non-interlocking, cut along color lines, artist: John William Godward, thanks to website visitor named Eleazar who has been studying his paintings. A Pears print appearing in their Christmas magazine in 1916.  Certainly, a "sultry" lady!
From Wikipedia: "John William Godward (1861 – 1922) was an English painter from the end of the Neo-Classicist era. He was a protege of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema but his style of painting fell out of favor with the rise of modern art. He committed suicide at the age of 61 and is said to have written in his suicide note that "the world is not big enough for [both] myself and a Picasso".  Wikipedia
