The artist is Stanley Williams Cock (1874-1929), the third of six children born to a surgeon, Williams Cock and his wife Jane. The family lived at Queens Road, Peckham, London. Stanley Cock contributed to pictorial magazines of his day, and illustrated humorous postcards and amusing children's books. He had an enduring association with publishers Thomas Nelson. His youngest brother Hylton, also an illustrator, had an antique shop in Blackheath Village, SE London during the early part of the twentieth century.
