Unknown maker, solid wood, non-interlocking, cut extensively along color lines. From first appearances not a very attractive puzzle but the story that is portrayed is most unusual. Inside the box cover was glued the following description:
"There is, in all too many married lives, what is called "the newspaper-at-breakfast state": when the husband, forgetful of the courtesy due his wife, hides himself behind his newspaper at the breakfast table. Sometimes verbally, but mostly silently, the wife always resents the discourtesy, as she rightly should. It is often, as this picture indicates, the first intimation that comes to the bride that the days of her husband's courtesy to her and consideration for her are over. It is the first awakening, and a sad one.---The Editors"
The artist (unknown) has certainly capture the husband's discourtesy and the wife's resentment! Most likely cut by a woman since most puzzle makers during the 1909 era were women. The generic box shown on the right is classic for puzzle made by unknown makers of that era.
