Labeled Jig Saw Puzzle by unknown maker, 1909 c, solid wood, non-interlocking, color line cut. Sympathetic early scene with unusual title using “black” long before it became fashionable. Artist is Harry Roseland (c. 1867—1950) who was one of the most notable painters of the genre painting school around the turn of the 20th century. An American, Roseland was primarily known for paintings centered on poor African-Americans. Roseland was largely self-taught, and never traveled to Europe to study art. Wikipedia.
This puzzle has been displayed on my website for a couple of decades. I found another of the same scene (but titled "Playing Checkers) which I have posted in its place, simply because it is a more recent acquisition. A/k/a "Checkers" or "Playing Checkers".
